A vast majority of our patients come to Renew Laser and Skin with specific skin and body concerns to reverse the aging process and improve simple day to day comfort and confidence. I have discovered patients are willing to invest in any treatments necessary to diminish wrinkles, tighten sagging skin, even out texture, or tone their abdomen and thighs for an improved lifestyle. Yet, most aren’t on the right skin care at home or neglect skincare altogether. There are a lot less options to choose from for injectables than, let’s say, sunscreen! If I can undo all the brown spots on someone’s face why should they go through the headache of sifting through the vast array of SPF to apply at home? The answer is PREVENTION. I always tell patients if you do your homework, you’ll pass the test when you come here. By applying the right skin care regimen to your morning and night routine, you can shave off hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in procedures today and for years to come.
So, which product do you choose? Is it best to stick with one brand? Do drugstore or medical grade quality really matter? Are the most expensive products truly better? And do I really need that serum?
Bottom line, skin care can be overwhelming. Yet it is crucial we give our skin the utmost care. Your skin is the largest organ in your body. If we take the time to consistently care for, redecorate, and remodel our homes, we must realize it is essential to take care of the house our bodies live in too.
To get started, a great skin care regimen is based on a nice little acronym many call GRASS. You need Growth factors, Retinol, Antioxidants, Specialties serums (eye cream, acne cream, etc) and Sunscreen. Not every product will be right for every patient, every season, and every age; which is why we customize the skin care routine, taking into account not only the patient's skin needs, but also their lifestyle, budget, and other treatments they are doing in office. Each of these above ingredients works in it’s own unique way to keep your skin healthy.
Growth factors are made by our body to help stimulate collagen production; as we age the rate at which our body produces growth factors declines and hence collagen decreases. Daily use of skin care products containing a high dose of growth factors can support the repair of damaged skin to increase collagen and improve elasticity.
Retinols, or retinoids, stimulate surface skin cells to turn over and die quickly, making way for new cells to grow underneath. It can help fade dark spots, treat acne, helps with skin discoloration, and reduce appearance of fine lines. Because retinol can make you sensitive to sun exposure, I only put retinol on at night to avoid dryness, redness, and irritation.
Antioxidants protect your skin cells from oxidative damage caused by the sun or environmental toxins and helps limit the production of free radicals. These natural sources have many benefits from aiding in tightening the skin to calming inflammation.
Specialty products are a way for me to customize a patient’s skin care routine to address any problems they may have; it can include products like eye creams, acne treatments, moisturizers, and serums. I myself suffered (and sometimes still do) from acne as a teenager. It left me with pigmentation and scarring that I’ve had to treat with different lasers, peels and products. Nothing makes me happier than being able to prevent that for my younger patients.
Lastly, it is critical to apply sunscreen in the morning before you start your makeup application and head out for the day. Most sunscreens protect against UVB rays, which cause sunburns, but you need protection against UVA and IR rays as well, which can cause pigmentation and aid in premature aging. Two must have ingredients in your SPF are Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide (a little something to help narrow down your search!).
I am passionate about boosting my patient’s confidence and self-esteem here at Renew Laser and Skin and am excited to customize not only your treatment plans, but find the best products for your skin as well!
